Toss # 22          Date:  9/18/2007         Release Time:  07:15           Weather:  Moderate to Strong Headwinds

Location:  Fernley, NV  -  104 Miles                                                  Elevation:  4200 Feet

This toss from 104 Miles was the final long training toss before the first race from 165 Miles.  We had to go on this toss 1 day earlier than planned due to an incoming storm/bad weather for Wednesday and Thursday.  The headwinds were forecasted to be strong for Tuesday as well (day of the toss), but with the following days looking even worse, up the birds went on only 1 day of rest from their last 73.5 Mile toss.  The east slope of the mountains (Nevada side) ended up being fairly calm, but there were strong headwinds in the western slope of the sierra's and in the foothills on the way home.  So the first drop's speed was slowed due to the headwinds, but it made for a good working 104 Mile toss. 

As you can see the birds did fairly well with 22 birds on the first drop and another smaller drop just a few minutes later.  2 Birds were out overnight and both of those are still missing at the end of the 2nd day.  If the weather cooperates we will try to get in a short toss on Friday.  The first race from Lovelock (165 Miles) will be held either Sunday or Monday depending on weather and also transportation.  Some weather reports are forecasting a chance of rain on Sunday in the mountains, Monday looks perfect on all forecasts.  Jon is also the combine truck driver and there is a 60% chance of rain in the mountains/Nevada on Saturday, which means the combine race may be pushed back to Sunday, which would force us to fly this race on Monday.  I will update the website Friday Evening with the status on what day we fly the 165 Mile race.
