Race # 4 Date: November 10th, 2008 Location: Carlin, NV (289 Miles) Release Time: 07:15 AM Birds Entered: 69 3rd Day Results Updated Weather: Overcast at Release and for the first 100 Miles (no sun). The next 100 Miles were partly cloudy to mostly sunny. The sierra's and west slope were mostly cloudy to overcast. Finally the weather at the loft was partly cloudy. The winds were very light for most of the course.
Well it's all over with and another race where the birds performed much better than the conditions would of indicated. The clouds were completely socked in this morning to where the driver and the birds could not see the sun, so that is the reason we kept them at Carlin (289 Miles) as opposed to Elko (304 Miles) where the weather was even worse. The first 100 miles or so were solid overcast with no breaks in the clouds. The High Sierra's were also mostly cloudy to overcast. The weather here started off the day very cloudy but improved throughout the day which made for a pretty good day for lunch and to watch birds. In the mountains and Nevada was a different story though. Based on what I saw this morning on the satellite, I was concerned that we might not get more than a couple day birds.......so to end up with 21 on the first drop was pretty wild and very surprising.
The birds came in just after the time we finished the calcutta auction and people were just starting to lightly watch the skies. The first drop was very skittish and jittery when they came in and did not want to land. Once they did land, there were a few birds that looked tired, but most looked great, including 3 cocks that were cooing chasing hens around. Surprising that many birds stayed together for that far in tough conditions, but this group of birds has hung together in large groups throughout all the races. At some point in each race we had a drop of 20+ birds. The birds are very healthy and were in peak condition for the race (loft flying 90 minutes to 2 hours every day the past week). We ended up getting 39 home on the day out of 69 which considering the weather, was a number I didn't think we would be anywhere near this morning. I will post the 2nd day birds tomorrow.
Ace Pigeon Standings have been updated and the Final Top-9 are listed in the results section. Congratulations to Jack Wilburn who was 1st Overall Ace Pigeon with his HANG 749 BC. Jack definitely had the best pigeon of the race series, as 'HANG 749' was = 1st, = 2nd, = 1st, and = 1st in the four races. A great pigeon. |
