Final Toss Before Race # 1 |
With the weather looking horrible the rest of the week in the
mountains, this was the final toss before Race #1. Steamboat is a good
location for a refresher before the first race, as it is in the high desert
mountains just to the east of the high sierras. The weather for
Wednesday was light headwinds in the morning becoming stronger throughout
the day.
Jon let the birds out at 7:20 and they took off out of sight quickly going south, but he spotted them again a few minutes later very high and headed towards Mount Rose as they should be. The light headwinds may have slowed them down a little. Apparently they also got together with some other birds along the way as the first group arrived straight out of the north and flew around for a couple minutes. As they were landing another group came from behind the loft and still as that group was coming in another group came in from the west as well. All of this happened over the course of 3 or 4 minutes so it's hard to tell which birds were in which groups as they all landed and started going in together. There were only 3 birds that were actually late and luckily they all made it, so we have 85 birds ready to go for Race #1. The first race will be flown either Sunday or Monday, but right now I am leaning towards Monday. The weather for Saturday looks really bad which means all the combine races will get pushed into Sunday. The weather for Sunday is also somewhat questionable, but Monday looks beautiful. Stay tuned to the front page of the website for word on which day they will go. Finally there are still some breeders that have not paid their remaining entry fees. We talked to and heard from a few of you today, so there are only a couple left that I have been unable to contact and heard nothing from. Remember Saturday is the deadline for entry fees so you need to figure out a way to get them to us and let us know. (Thanks - Matt) |
